When my better, cleverer half said that we are getting a ‘Gousto’ box, quite frankly I had no idea what she was talking about. Heres a Gousto review.

Fast forward a little and I was fully aware that we was getting food, in a box, delivered to our house. Set meals, ready to cook. My initial thought was, why would we get food delivered? Next was is the food going to be good, is it fresh, will it taste good? I have been brought up with fresh food on the table almost everyday, most days my dad cutting up a side of meat on the kitchen (he was a butcher) and as he got older, moved away from his shop, most of our vegetables were grew in the garden.

There’s nothing wrong with going to the shops, getting some food shopping, putting it away, making it and eating it. Seems stupid.

How wrong was I!?

Little did I appreciate that generally, I only do the latter part. Yes, most of the time I used to just eat it. Zoe spent spent time planning our meals, going shopping and cooking.

There are various options of ‘food in a box’, we have been using ‘Gousto’ and so far I’m impressed. Impressed enough to write this! A Gousto box contains the raw ingredients for up to 4 recipes – for 2 or 4 people each meal. If you want more, simply order more boxes. The recipes change every Tuesday – we have been having 1 box a week delivered on a Sunday, this gives us 4 Gousto meals a week. The rest we use up whats in cupboards or make something ourselves from scratch.

The first box we received on a Sunday afternoon. It all comes in a Gousto branded cardboard box, packed out with the raw ingredients individually packaged. The items that need to be refrigerated are wrapped in insulation along with some large plastic sealed ice cubes to keep it all cool. Tucked into the sides are the recipe cards. At this point i was still skeptical but let Zoe deal with it all including making the meal that night. To my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed the meal! The food was fresh, tasted good and most importantly Zoe was happy that we had got some meals at a discounted rate. (Check their site – they normally have a new customer offer)

After making a few dinners myself, I feel quite confident that I can whip up a good meal for us both in a reasonable time following these recipes. We have not had a meal yet thats been bad. Plus points for us:

  • Most meals ready in no more than 45 minutes
  • Recipe cards very easy to follow, if you do it as it says step by step everything comes together at the the right time
  • All the ingredients are ready to go, all precise measures – no weighing out or left overs.
  • No going shopping!
  • Reasonably priced for good quality meals.
  • Great variety

A Gousto box with 4 recipes for 2 people is £34.99 (Certain recipes they add a few quid), thats generally £4.37 per person, per meal. I make that reasonably good value – If you was to go out and buy everything, plus transport, plus the temptation to buy anything else – you could easily spend more.

The time saved organising, cooking & getting meals is great too – like most of us, we both work early till late, this is just a little bit of time saving for us. Its easy and quick to make a meal up after work for us without making a mess too!

Overall it’s made cooking more enjoyable, I’m quite happy to make our meals from Gousto. The meals have literally come out like the pictures from there site above. (Classic Spaghetti Bolognese, Persian Beef & Lentil Stew & Rump Steak (The steak is good)) If your still not sure just give it a go, you might surprise yourself and in the long run you will probably find yourself getting more involved – at least this will make your other half happier! Even if you cant make toast but can read instructions, follow the method and it will come out good.

In my experience as a novice…

  • Always skim through the recipe first, sometimes it may seem a little complicated however follow it step by step
  • So far the extras that I have come across needed: Olive/vegetable oil. Sugar. Salt/pepper. Flour. Butter. Milk – Keep them handy
  • Keep a sink of hot soapy water and a towel to hand
  • Candles on the dinner table (She will appreciate it)

Thats all! Give it a go! Get 60% off your first box and 30% off all your other boxes in your first month here on Gousto’s website.
