Introduction
Previously, I wrote a post about how our Fiesta got stolen, by the ‘program a key method’. This time, a quick guide on how to fit a ‘dummy’ OBD port. This is based on the Fiesta 2008 – 2017 but similar for all Fords.
This will cost around a tenner, take 15 minutes of your time & save a lot of heartache.
Its worth noting that this is not a completely fail safe method of protecting you Fiesta (or any keyless ford), but it will probably stop them in their tracks to move on to the next victim.
For a quick reminder, thieves gain access to car, plug in a computer (to the OBD port), program a key & drive away. By fitting a dummy OBD port, it will all look factory untouched and they will still be able to plug in their computer, it will power it up but nothing will happen when they try to connect the software.
Be sure to remind anyone working on the car that they will need to remove the cover on the side of the dash to get to the actual OBD port.
Parts / Tools Required
- Dummy OBD Port loom
- Flat blade screwdriver
- Plastic trim prising tool (optional)
First listing is for Fiestas 2008 – 2017, white port.
Second listing is for Fiestas 2017 onwards, black port.
How to
First step is to remove the OBD plug from the dashboard. Under the exterior light switch pack, there is a small compartment. Open it, and then squeeze the compartment to allow you to pull it out of its hinges.
Next remove the plug from the dashboard. Use a flat blade screwdriver to push the tab on on the side of the plug to release it and push it through.
Now remove the end cover on the side of the dashboard. Pull the weather seal back, then using a plastic prising tool (or a flat blade screwdriver), pop it open and remove it.
For a little bit more access to the area, remove the exterior light switch. Put your hand through where the cover you’ve just removed was and release the switch clips and push through.
Pull the ODB port through and attach the dummy wiring loom. (dont forget to push the red tag in to lock it in place). I also used a tie to secure the actual OBD port up by the light switch. (We don’t want potential thief to pull loom through to get the real one).
Lastly refit your ‘new’ OBD plug into the dashboard and pop the cover back on. Looks original.
